Questions to Ask Your Interviewer
You’re all set for your interview. You practiced answering common interview questions. You picked out your interview outfit. When you finally reach the end of your interview, you breathe a sigh of relief. Then, your potential employer says “do you have any questions for me?” Good interviewers know that you should absolutely have some questions prepared. Here is a list of a handful of different questions (and some follow up questions) to keep in mind when the hiring manager asks for your input!
What do I need to do to succeed in this position?
In accordance with asking about the goals, you should be asking your interviewer how you can succeed. You might also be able to find out what your normal routine will look like. For example, if you’re told you’ll need to have advanced Microsoft Excel skills, follow up with “how often will I work in the program?” or “what functions will I use within Excel?”
What’s the company culture like?
In other words, how will you fit in? Maybe the office likes to do a happy-hour or maybe they provide a 10-minute massage appointment once a month. This can help you predict how you’ll fit in with your colleagues. Likewise, you can follow up with asking the hiring manager why they like working at the company. Getting to know the interviewer is important, especially if they may be your new supervisor.
What are some of the goals in the department?
Asking about goals will attract a good kind of attention from the person conducting the interview. Your interest in the goals of the department can then provide a follow-up question of “how can I contribute to these goals?” You can then elaborate on your experience and finish off on why you’d be a perfect fit for the role.
