Financial Controller

Our client, a contemporary fashion & accessories brand, is seeking a Financial Controller to oversee the company’s financial operations and provide strategic leadership across accounting, reporting, and financial planning functions. This is a hybrid role, requiring 4 days per week in the New York City office and 1 day remote on Friday. The ideal candidate will bring a strong foundation in accounting and financial management, paired with hands-on experience in retail. This individual must currently be at the Controller level within a retail organization and possess the technical expertise and leadership acumen to support a fast-paced, founder-led business.

Job Duties Include:

  • Oversee preparation of accurate and timely financial statements, including income statements, balance sheets, and cash flow reports.
  • Maintain strong internal controls to ensure compliance and safeguard company assets.
  • Ensure adherence to GAAP and all relevant tax and regulatory standards.
  • Lead the annual budgeting and forecasting process, partnering with department heads to align financial goals with business strategy.
  • Analyze variances and provide actionable insights to improve performance.
  • Deliver clear financial presentations and reporting for leadership review.
  • Manage day-to-day accounting operations including AP, AR, payroll, and general ledger functions.
  • Oversee monthly, quarterly, and annual closes, ensuring accuracy and timeliness.
  • Continuously improve financial processes and systems for efficiency and scalability.
  • Oversee all tax filings and compliance activities in partnership with external auditors and tax consultants.
  • Monitor and implement updates to financial regulations and standards.
  • Lead and mentor a small accounting and finance team, fostering development and collaboration.
  • Set clear performance expectations and drive accountability within the department.
  • Serve as a key financial partner to the CFO/COO, providing insights and recommendations to guide decision-making.
  • Assess financial risks and opportunities and contribute to long-term strategic planning.
  • Maintain strong relationships with external stakeholders, including banks, auditors, and investors.
Job Qualifications Include:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field required; CPA or CMA certification required.
  • MBA or advanced degree in Finance is a plus.
  • 8+ years of progressive accounting and finance experience, with at least 3 years in a leadership role.
  • Must currently hold a Controller-level position within a retail organization.
  • Hands-on experience with ERP systems such as NetSuite, SAP, or QuickBooks.
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP, financial reporting, and compliance standards.
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
  • Proven ability to lead teams and collaborate effectively across departments in a fast-paced environment.
Salary: $100,000 – $150,000 base + bonus
