Staying Healthy at Work This Flu Season

Turning leaves, pumpkin spice, and Halloween are not the only things that come with the return of fall. The change of seasons can only mean the dreaded flu season is upon us once again.

But don’t panic! Although coworkers with colds may make you want to reach for your hand sanitizer every few minutes, it is entirely possible to stay healthy this flu season. By incorporating a few simple practices into your daily work routine, you can avoid the effects of flu season and stay healthy year-round. Here are some things you can do that will help make all the difference:

Get vaccinated! It takes about two weeks for the antibodies that protect against the flu to develop in your body. So don’t put it off any longer. Get vaccinated as soon as you can!

Wash your hands frequently and keep hand sanitizer on you at all times. It may repeatedly be stated, but washing your hands is extremely important- especially during flu season. Keep hand sanitizer in your bag or pocket to use after your commute in the morning or after touching a commonly shared space or object, like a doorknob.

Drink tea. Tea has a multitude of health benefits that can assist in keeping your immune system in check this flu season. Even one cup a day can help boost your immunity to fight off any unwanted germs.

Skip Happy Hour. A type of beverage you should pass on this flu season is alcohol. Excess alcohol consumption has been proven to weaken your immune system severely. Do your body (and wallet) a favor and skip the after-work happy hours this fall- especially since some of your co-workers in attendance may be sick already!

Stay home if you are the sick one. It’s not fair to yourself or your coworkers to be in the office when you are feeling under the weather. The body needs time to rest and recover, and you shouldn’t spread your germs to others. Missing a day of work may not be ideal. However, it will benefit everyone in the long run.
