The phrase “dress for success” may sound to some like a superficial idea of wearing expensive clothing to work to impress people artificially rather than with their work. However, dressing for success encompasses a very different meaning. To “dress for success” implies styling yourself in a way that makes you feel confident and at your best. Feeling good about yourself and the clothes you are in can have an overall positive effect on the quality of your work and your confidence in the work place.
We asked one of Pyramid Consulting Group’s top retail recruiters, Amelia, about her thoughts on what it means to dress for success. She told us, “The way you dress is a reflection of who you are. If you come to work looking and feeling great, it will show. It’s a way to demonstrate that you respect yourself and your co-workers to bring the best you to the office. It indicates that you’re ready to work- the effort you put in to look good, will be the same effort that shows in your job.”
Amelia’s opinions are backed by science, too. Scientific American conducted a study in 2016 that proved what one wears on the job can have a substantial effect on the work they produce. It’s all about mindset: if you feel good because you look good, you’re more likely to perform at your best.
Dressing for success does not have to be expensive either. Affordable staple pieces can be purchased once and worn multiple times in various outfits. It’s all about feeling confident in the clothes you wear and presenting yourself well.
